Classics at the Crossing: Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)

Classics at the Crossing and Jay's Pix Presents the classic: Journey to the Center of the Earth

After the critical and public acclaim of Walt Disney’s second live-action production in 1954 of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the time seemed ripe to bring the works of Jules Verne to mass audiences.  Based on the novel of the same name by noted French science fiction writer Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905), the book was first published in France in 1864. This handsomely mounted production was a box-office smash when released just in time for the holiday season in December of 1959, and paved the way for remakes of Verne’s The Lost World in 1960 and Mysterious Island in 1961.

After accidentally uncovering a clue of a lone expedition deep below the surface of the earth, a curious professor of geology in 19th-century Scotland mans a passage to the Icelandic volcano that will mark the way of the intrepid explorers. What they encounter along their many months of travel downward is the stuff of a crackling good adventure yarn, filled with awesome beauty, giant beasts, spectacle and danger around every bend. The RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK of the 1950s!

Starring:  James Mason, Arlene Dahl, Pat Boone, Thayer David, Peter Ronson.

Thunderous and majestic music by Bernard Herrmann (North by NorthwestVertigoPsycho). Interior scenes filmed in Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. (Nominatedfor Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, Sound and Special Effects)
